Professor Sara Smith-Silverman (she/they)

This website is the result of a research project conducted by Professor Sara Smith-Silverman, a professor of History and LGBTQ+ Studies at American River College, a community college in Sacramento, over the course of 2023. The research project is focused on the lives and educational experiences of queer and trans community college students in California, with a particular focus on the Sacramento region. The centerpiece of the project consists of video-recorded interviews with students which focus on students’ intersectional experiences – the ways that class, race, ethnicity, and ability, in particular, shape their queerness and transness. You’ll also find here some resources useful for educators hoping to make your campus and your classrooms more trans- and queer-inclusive.

This research was made possible by  the Mellon ACLS Community College Faculty Fellowship and American River College’s Type A Research Leave, with financial support provided by the American River College People, Society and Culture Division and the Office of Equity, Institutional Effectiveness, & Innovation. The Sacramento City College Flagship Design Studio provided invaluable assistance with graphic design.
